“Romaría do Rapaz,” classified as unique in Galicia and Spain, stands out due to the fact that 90% of its organization is carried out by children, from 4 to 12 years old. It also stands out due to the place where it is held, a natural setting of particular beauty, a characteristic “carballeira” with centuries-old oaks surrounding the famous Sanctuary of La Saleta, in the parish of Siador.
The recreational event’s customary program includes workshops in the morning and afternoon, parks with inflatables, multi-adventure activities and traditional games.
In parallel to these activities, at 12.30 pm, the missionaries of La Salette organise a children’s Eucharist and, between 4 and 7 pm, simultaneous chess games are organised by the local Ágora group.
Throughout the day, the public can enjoy other entertainment initiatives featuring clowns, magicians and musical performances, such as that of Silleda’s Children’s and Youth Music Band. Finally, one of the festival’s “star” attractions begins at 7 pm, with a traditional parade featuring models wearing clothes made by the children and their parents using recycled materials. As in all “romerías,” the “carballeira” (oak grove) fills with families, sitting around a tablecloth, at tables or on the grass, to have lunch, a snack or dinner. There is also a nursery service so that everyone can attend, as well as stalls selling octopus.
This recreational-educational festival is unconditionally supported by the municipality, Community of La Salette Missionaries, Olaia Residents Association and other groups and institutions.
